How to choose dining chairs: a buying guide

Start with the table, not the chair

Almost every dining chair problem traces back to a measurement nobody took. Before you look at a single chair, measure two things: the height of your table’s underside (not the tabletop) and the clear length of each side.

You want 28–30 cm between the chair seat and the underside of the table. Less than that and tall guests knock their knees; more and people sit low, like children at an adult table. Most Indian dining tables sit at 75 cm, which puts the ideal seat height at 45–47 cm.

How many chairs actually fit

Allow 60 cm of table edge per person. That is the width of a comfortable place setting plus elbow room, and it is the number restaurants use when they are not trying to squeeze you in.

• Four-seater (120 cm): two on each long side, none at the ends
• Six-seater (180 cm): two per side, one at each end
• Eight-seater (240 cm): three per side, one at each end

Then check the room, not just the table. You need 90 cm of clearance behind each chair for someone to push back and stand up. If a wall or sideboard sits closer than that, use a bench on the tight side.

Seat depth and back angle

A dining chair is not a lounge chair and should not be comfortable enough to fall asleep in. Seat depth of 40–45 cm is right. Deeper than that and shorter people cannot reach the backrest without sliding forward.

The backrest should sit close to vertical, tilted back by no more than about 5 degrees. Anything more reclined pushes you away from the table and wrecks your posture over a long meal.

Choosing the material

Cane and rattan

Breathable, light to move, and forgiving in humid weather. Cane seats flex slightly as you sit, which is why they stay comfortable without cushions. They do need re-weaving eventually, usually after eight to ten years of daily use. Our Mandor cane dining chair is the version we recommend most often.

Solid wood

The most durable option and the easiest to repair. Look for a chair where the legs join the seat with mortise-and-tenon joints rather than screws and brackets. Sheesham and teak both hold up well; mango wood is lighter and cheaper but dents more easily.

Upholstered

Comfortable and quiet, but think hard about it if you have young children. If you go upholstered, choose a removable, washable cover and check the fabric’s rub count. Anything under 25,000 rubs will not survive a family dining table.

Leather

Wipes clean, ages well, and costs more upfront. It works best in dining rooms that double as something else, since leather reads as living-room furniture. Several of our Chesterfield chairs work at a table as well as they do in a study.

Matching chairs to a table you already own

Chairs do not need to match the table, and a set that matches too perfectly often looks like it came from a catalogue. Two rules keep a mismatched set from looking accidental:

• Repeat one material. If the table is teak, put teak somewhere in the chair, even just the legs.
• Keep the visual weight similar. A chunky farmhouse table overwhelms delicate metal chairs.

Mixing two chair styles works if you commit to it. Use one style down the long sides and a different one at the two ends.

Five things to check before you buy

• Sit in it for two minutes, not five seconds. Discomfort shows up slowly.
• Lift it. A chair you will move twice a day should not need two hands.
• Rock it on a hard floor. Any wobble in the showroom becomes a wobble at home.
• Check the joints, not the finish. Glue squeeze-out and visible screws at the leg join are a bad sign.
• Ask about replacement parts. Cane seats and chair glides wear out; you want to buy them separately.

What to spend

Dining chairs are the piece people under-budget, then replace within three years. As a rough guide for a set of six: below ₹15,000 the joints will be screwed rather than jointed; ₹15,000–40,000 buys solid wood or good cane that will last; above ₹40,000 you are paying for design, leather, or hand-finishing.
