We buy our timber as planks from Jodhpur's market, season it to 8–12% moisture before a board is cut, and joint our frames rather than screwing them. That means we can tell you exactly which wood is in your dining table and how the joints hold — and it means you aren't paying the three markups between a workshop floor and a showroom.

Almost every solid wood listing in India is one of these three, and almost none of them explain the difference — because the difference sometimes argues against the sale. Here's the honest version.
Sheesham — Indian rosewood, Dalbergia sissoo
Dense, hard, and interlocked in the grain, which is why it resists both denting and warping. It holds a joint better than anything else we cut — and for a dining table or a bed that has to stay rigid under load for twenty years, that matters more than any other property. The colour deepens with age rather than fading.
The trade-off: the most expensive of the three, usually by a wide margin. It's heavy — a solid Sheesham six-seater is genuinely hard to move. And matching the pronounced grain across a wide top takes board selection, which is part of the cost.

Acacia — the one that varies
Close behind Sheesham on hardness, and it does something visually that neither of the others do. A single Acacia top can run from pale honey to reddish brown across its width, with strong figure and occasional dark mineral streaks. Some people see that and want it immediately. Others see it and think the boards don't match. Both reactions are correct.
The trade-off: the piece you receive will not look exactly like the photograph, because no two Acacia boards do. It's the single most common reason an Acacia piece gets returned. If you like uniformity, this is not your wood.

Mango — the honest budget hardwood
It gets unfairly dismissed. It comes from trees that have stopped fruiting, so it's a genuine by-product rather than timber grown for felling, and it is a real hardwood — not a softwood, not engineered board. Fine even grain, pale gold, and it takes stain beautifully; a walnut-finished Mango sideboard is hard to tell from something far more expensive.
The trade-off: softer than Sheesham, so it dents. Put a Mango dining table in a house with three children and it will show its history within a couple of years. It also wants a stable indoor spot — it's more sensitive to prolonged damp.
The comparison that actually matters: most people aren't choosing Sheesham vs Mango. They're choosing solid wood vs particle board with a wood-look laminate at a similar price. Mango outlives that by fifteen years, can be sanded and refinished, and holds a screw when a handle works loose. If budget is the constraint, drop to Mango before you drop to MDF.

How a piece gets made
Five steps. The second one is where most furniture goes wrong.
Sheesham, Acacia and Mango, bought as planks from Jodhpur's timber market — a few kilometres from the workshop. We reject anything with unstable grain or excessive sapwood before it enters the yard, because a bad board costs far more to discover after it's a tabletop.

Buying from a workshop is slower. Here's the whole trade.
We make to order, so delivery is typically four weeks rather than four days. There's no same-week gratification, and you can't walk into a showroom in your city and sit on the exact chair. For a bedside table, that might not be worth it. For a dining table you intend to keep for twenty years, four weeks is not a long time.

We buy the planks, season them, cut the joints, sand and finish every piece, and ship it direct to your home anywhere in India. The workshop is the business. There is no showroom, no wholesaler, and no brand licensing somebody else's output.
Why Jodhpur makes most of India's furniture
Buy a solid wood dining table in Delhi, Bangalore or Mumbai and there's a reasonable chance it was made within a few kilometres of our floor. The brands selling it rarely mention this.
The trade grew out of Rajasthani architecture — carved jharokha window frames, heavy studded doors, latticed screens — work that demanded serious joinery and supported generations of carpenters. When demand for architectural woodwork slowed, the skills moved to furniture. Then, from the 1980s, an export boom sent containers of solid wood furniture to Europe and the United States, which brought in scale and forced quality upward: an order that fails inspection comes back across an ocean, so workshops learned to season timber properly.
What's left is a cluster. Within a short drive of our workshop there are timber merchants who know what a furniture maker needs, seasoning yards, specialist carvers, polishers, upholsterers, brass and iron hardware suppliers, and freight operators who handle furniture every day. A karigar here who has cut mortise-and-tenon joints for twenty years is not remarkable. That depth isn't something a new workshop elsewhere can hire into existence.
What buying direct from the manufacturer actually changes
A piece of furniture that travels workshop → wholesaler → brand → showroom → you picks up a margin at every stop. Each one is earned by somebody doing real work. They just accumulate. Ours goes workshop → you, which is the whole of the pricing argument.
But the price is only part of it.
We know what's in the wood. We buy timber directly and season it in our own yard. When we say a table is solid Sheesham, we watched it arrive as planks — we're not repeating a supplier's claim.
We can be honest about trade-offs. Mango wood is softer than Sheesham; it dents more easily and costs less. Acacia has dramatic grain variation that some people love and some people return. A retailer buying in finished stock has an incentive to blur those distinctions. We don't, because a return costs us more than the sale was worth.
Changes are a conversation. Because your piece is made after you order it, a different length, height or finish is a phone call rather than a special order. Most changes cost nothing.

How we make it
Timber. Sheesham (Indian rosewood), Acacia and Mango, bought as planks from Jodhpur's timber market. We reject anything with unstable grain or excessive sapwood before it enters the yard.
Seasoning. Wood is dried to 8–12% moisture content before anything is cut. This is the step that gets skipped when furniture is made fast, and it is the single reason cheap solid wood furniture splits in its first summer — under-seasoned wood keeps drying after it becomes a table.
Joinery. Frames are jointed, not just screwed. Mortise-and-tenon and dowel joints go where the load is. That's what keeps a dining table rigid after a decade of people leaning on it.
Finishing. Progressive grits, then matte, natural, walnut or distressed. Finishing is where a competent table becomes a good one, and it's mostly patience.
Checking. Every piece is assembled and checked before it's crated — legs on, drawers in, doors hung. Then it ships free, anywhere in India, typically within four weeks.
Solid hardwood, and nothing else
Everything we make is solid Sheesham, Acacia or Mango. No veneer, no particle board, no MDF with a wood-look laminate.
That claim is common enough in Indian furniture listings that it has stopped meaning much, so here is the specific version. Sheesham is the hardest of the three and holds a joint best — it's what we'd put under a dining table or a bed. Acacia sits close behind with far more colour variation between boards, which makes it right for a piece meant to be noticed and wrong if you want uniformity. Mango is softer and considerably cheaper, with a fine even grain that takes stain beautifully; it's the honest budget hardwood, and it will outlive a particle-board equivalent by fifteen years.
For most Indian homes we'd suggest Sheesham for the dining table and the bed, Mango for everything else, and Acacia where a piece is meant to be the thing people notice. Is Furnliv a manufacturer or a reseller? A manufacturer. Furnliv is a solid wood furniture workshop in Tanavada Industrial Area, Jodhpur. We buy and season our own timber and make every piece we sell — we don't buy in finished stock from other workshops.
Does buying direct from a Jodhpur manufacturer cost less? Yes, and the reason is structural rather than a discount. Furniture sold through a showroom carries a margin from the wholesaler, the brand and the retailer on top of the workshop's price. Selling direct removes those stages.
Which wood should I choose? Sheesham for anything taking daily structural load — dining tables, beds, wardrobes. Acacia where you want visible character and don't mind boards that vary. Mango for storage, TV units and bedsides, where its lower hardness matters less and the saving is significant.
