Which table for which job

Dining tables sit at 75 cm and are sized by seats: 60 cm of edge per person.

Coffee tables work best at roughly the same height as your sofa seat, give or take 5 cm, and about two-thirds its length. Leave 45 cm between the two.

Console tables are shallow — 30 to 40 cm deep — so they fit hallways and the back of a sofa without blocking a walkway.

Side and end tables should land within arm’s reach of the seat they serve, ideally level with the armrest.

Nesting sets earn their place in small rooms, giving you three surfaces when guests arrive and one when they leave.

Tops and bases

Solid wood is the only tabletop material that can be repaired: scratches sand out, and the surface can be refinished decades later. Expect small seasonal movement in a well-made solid top — that is the wood working with humidity, not a fault.

Base type matters more than most people expect. Four corner legs are strongest but dictate exactly where people can sit. A pedestal or trestle base lets you fit an extra chair in at the cost of some stability.
