Choosing by job, not by looks

Chairs fail more often from a mismatch of purpose than of quality. A dining chair should be upright and comfortable for an hour, not comfortable enough to fall asleep in — seat depth of 40–45 cm, backrest close to vertical. A reading armchair wants the opposite: a deeper seat, a higher back, and arms at elbow height.

Bar chairs are sized to the counter, not the room. Allow 25–30 cm between the seat and the underside of the counter, which usually means a 65 cm seat for a 90 cm counter and a 75 cm seat for a 105 cm bar.

Materials

Cane and rattan breathe well in humid weather and flex slightly as you sit, which is why they stay comfortable without cushions. They need re-weaving after eight to ten years of daily use.

Solid wood is the most durable and the easiest to repair. Look for mortise-and-tenon joints where the legs meet the seat rather than screws and brackets.

Leather wipes clean, survives pets, and develops a patina rather than looking worn. Our Chesterfield range uses hand-stitched cowhide over kiln-dried hardwood frames.

What seat height should I choose for my dining table?

For a standard 75 cm table, a 45–47 cm seat height gives the right clearance.

Are cane seats durable?

Yes, with normal use. Cane is a serviceable material — seats can be re-woven rather than replaced.

Can I buy chairs without the table?

Yes, all chairs are sold individually as well as in sets.
