Sizing the table to the room

A dining table needs 90 cm of clear space on every side — the minimum for pulling a chair out and walking behind someone seated. Measure the room, subtract 180 cm from each dimension, and what remains is the largest table that will actually work.

Then size by people, allowing 60 cm of table edge each: 120 cm seats four, 180 cm seats six, 240 cm seats eight. Buy for how you eat on an ordinary weeknight, not for the one dinner a year with twelve guests.

Chairs that suit the table

Leave 28–30 cm between the chair seat and the underside of the table. With a standard 75 cm table height, that puts the ideal seat height at 45–47 cm. Check the apron depth too — a deep rail under the tabletop can stop armchairs sliding under at all.
