Planning the layout first

Most living rooms fail on circulation rather than on furniture. Before choosing anything, mark the walkways: you need roughly 75 cm for a main route through the room, and 45 cm between the sofa and the coffee table — close enough to reach a cup, far enough to walk past.

A sofa should occupy no more than about two-thirds of the wall it sits against. Anything larger and the room reads as furniture with some floor around it.

Mixing pieces without matching everything

A living room where every piece matches tends to look like a showroom rather than a home. Repeat one material across pieces — teak legs echoing a teak tabletop — and keep the visual weight consistent. That is usually enough to make a mixed set read as deliberate.
